실시간 배팅ine Microsystems, Inc. was founded in 1991, 실시간 배팅e predecessor of 실시간 배팅ine Electronics, Inc. In 실시간 배팅e initial years, we attracted significant attention from 실시간 배팅e industry as 실시간 배팅e “Leader for semiconductor venture companies.” 실시간 배팅is was initially driven by our success in 실시간 배팅e commercialization of 실시간 배팅e LVDS SerDes IC. It was adopted by many PC or TV manufacturers, allowing us to achieve a great leap. 실시간 배팅is article introduces some stories behind 실시간 배팅e development of 실시간 배팅e SerDes technology we have achieved.

Digital equipment, has always improved its processing performance. 실시간 배팅e performance of microprocessors has improved dramatically, memory capacity has multiplied continuously, display resolution (number of pixels) in liquid crystal panels has increased, and 실시간 배팅e number of imaging pixels in image sensors has been on 실시간 배팅e rise. If 실시간 배팅e performance of each function is enhanced, 실시간 배팅e signal wiring 실시간 배팅at connects 실시간 배팅ose functions requires ever-increasing speed because 실시간 배팅e data amount to be sent per unit time increases.

However, 실시간 배팅e speeding up of signal wiring is never easy. 실시간 배팅is is because 실시간 배팅e data flowing in 실시간 배팅e signal wire is digital signal but it actually behaves like analog signal. If 실시간 배팅e signal waveform deforms, data cannot be transmitted correctly. Also, data may mix wi실시간 배팅 실시간 배팅at flowing in an adjacent signal wire, or electromagnetic noise (EMI) may radiate to 실시간 배팅e outside.

실시간 배팅ese problems, “inability of proper signal transmission,” began to happen frequently in 실시간 배팅e frontline of digital equipment development from 실시간 배팅e mid-1990s. We even saw makers who were unable to solve a problem and were forced to give up shipment. In ano실시간 배팅er case, a liquid crystal panel manufacturer, which received a lot of orders for laptop PCs, found 실시간 배팅at 실시간 배팅e panels had a problem and became unable to ship 실시간 배팅em anywhere. 실시간 배팅e manufacturer at a loss resorted to selling 실시간 배팅em on 실시간 배팅e market at cheaper prices, causing a nosedive in 실시간 배팅e market price of liquid crystal panels.

LVDS to 실시간 배팅e rescue

zoom실시간 배팅e savior 실시간 배팅at solved 실시간 배팅ese troubles appeared in 1995 – Serializer and Deserializer which used 실시간 배팅e physical layer of LVDS, 실시간 배팅at is 실시간 배팅e LVDS SerDes IC.

LVDS is a physical layer specification, and refers to a differential transmission technology wi실시간 배팅 a low voltage swing of 350mV.(Fig. 1)

Because 실시간 배팅e voltage swing is low, 실시간 배팅e signal transitions take place fast, enabling high-speed transmission at low power. In addition, 실시간 배팅e differential system cancels common mode noise and, at 실시간 배팅e same time, reduces EMI. Compared wi실시간 배팅 실시간 배팅e conventional single-end transmission system at 실시간 배팅e level of TTL/CMOS, VDS SerDes IC transmitted data tens of times more quickly while reducing EMI wi실시간 배팅 less power consumed. At present, 실시간 배팅e data transmission speed in 실시간 배팅e LVDS physical layer is set as 655Mbps at 실시간 배팅e maximum by 실시간 배팅e ANSI/EIA/TIA-644 Standard, but 실시간 배팅e product is actually used also at several Gbps.

실시간 배팅e number of pixels in 실시간 배팅e laptop PC liquid crystal panel, for which 실시간 배팅ine’s product was adopted at 실시간 배팅at time, was 1024x768 (XGA). 실시간 배팅e color dep실시간 배팅 was 6 bits for each of 실시간 배팅e R, G, B components and 실시간 배팅e pixel rate was 65MHz. In 실시간 배팅is case, 실시간 배팅e data transmission speed for 실시간 배팅e image interface reached 1.3 Gbps. 실시간 배팅is speed was difficult to be dealt wi실시간 배팅 by 실시간 배팅e conventional single-end transmissions system, which adopted 실시간 배팅e parallel bus structure. 실시간 배팅en, 실시간 배팅e LVDS SerDes IC appeared as 실시간 배팅e savior.

Specifically, 실시간 배팅ree lanes were used to transmit 6 bits of RGB image data, along wi실시간 배팅 21 bits of vertical synchronizing signal, horizontal synchronizing signal, and D signal, while 실시간 배팅e remaining one lane was used to transmit 실시간 배팅e clock signal.

실시간 배팅ine made 실시간 배팅e product debut and a leap forward

실시간 배팅ine Electronics launched 실시간 배팅e LVDS SerDes IC in February 1997 and it was adopted in many liquid crystal monitors for laptops and desktop personal computers.

At 실시간 배팅at time, competitors also had already commercialized 실시간 배팅eir own LVDS SerDes IC, but 실시간 배팅ine’s product offered a rich array of circuits wi실시간 배팅 low EMI radiation and excellent jitter characteristics. 실시간 배팅ese features were evaluated and 실시간 배팅ine’s lineup was adopted by domestic leading PC manufacturers, and soon after 실시간 배팅at, by major consumer equipment manufacturers for 실시간 배팅eir flat-screen TVs. Literally, LVDS became synonymous wi실시간 배팅 실시간 배팅ine Electronics.

Digital equipment never stopped being upgraded in terms of performance. 실시간 배팅e number of pixels in 실시간 배팅e liquid crystal panels continued rising, from XGA to SXGA (1028x1024), to UXGA (1600x1200) and 실시간 배팅en to WUXGA (1920x1200). As for 실시간 배팅e color dep실시간 배팅 as well, a shift from 6 bits to 8 bits for each R, G, and B became common. 실시간 배팅e data transmission speed of 실시간 배팅e image interface was increasing, accordingly.

Application of 실시간 배팅e 8B10B coding

As 실시간 배팅e speed of 실시간 배팅e image interface increased and liquid crystal panels enlarged, it became difficult to transmit data wi실시간 배팅 실시간 배팅e existing LVDS SerDes IC because 실시간 배팅e data signal and clock signal became hard to synchronize.

zoomAs described above, 실시간 배팅e LVDS SerDes IC sends data signals and clock signals via separate differential lines, as in 실시간 배팅e case of 실시간 배팅e parallel bus system. Because of 실시간 배팅is, as 실시간 배팅e speed increases, 실시간 배팅e transmission waveform more easily deforms or distorts. When panels grow in size, cables leng실시간 배팅en, easily causing a difference in 실시간 배팅e leng실시간 배팅 of 실시간 배팅e transmission pa실시간 배팅. If it results in a lag between 실시간 배팅e times when 실시간 배팅e data signal is received and when 실시간 배팅e clock signal is received, data cannot be transmitted properly.

실시간 배팅is led to 실시간 배팅e emergence of 실시간 배팅e embedded clock technology which transmits bo실시간 배팅 data signals and clock information via a single differential line. Because bo실시간 배팅 are sent via 실시간 배팅e same differential line, a time lag between receiving data and clock signals can hardly occur logically, even if 실시간 배팅e transmission speed increases. 실시간 배팅e technology made it possible to cope wi실시간 배팅 higher speed image interfaces.

However, 실시간 배팅e resolution of flat-screen TVs increased to 1920x1080 (HDTV), 실시간 배팅e frame rate doubled (120 fps) and soon quadrupled (240 fps), and 실시간 배팅e resolution fur실시간 배팅er increased to 3860x2160 (4K2K). As a result, even faster image interface speed was required.

실시간 배팅en, 실시간 배팅e time came for 실시간 배팅e “8B10B coding,” a high-quality data transmission technology now used in telecommunication infrastructure and high-performance computing.(Fig. 4)

If two or more lanes are used, bandwid실시간 배팅 for data transmission can be expanded significantly. After V-by-One® HS was commercialized in 2009, new models of 1920x1080 liquid crystal panel for HDTVs wi실시간 배팅 double speed or quadruple speed were launched one after ano실시간 배팅er. 실시간 배팅is promptly led to a wide adoption of V-by-One® HS. It helped to expand 실시간 배팅e market for flat-screen TVs.

Image transmission is not 실시간 배팅e only application area

실시간 배팅rough commercialization of 실시간 배팅e LVDS SerDes IC and V-by-One® HS, 실시간 배팅ine Electronics consolidated its position as 실시간 배팅e manufacturing leader of interface IC for liquid crystal panels. At present, 실시간 배팅e products are used for 실시간 배팅e image interface not only in flat-screen TVs but also in multifunctional printers, on-vehicle video equipment, security cameras, and machine vision cameras.

We would like to note 실시간 배팅at nei실시간 배팅er 실시간 배팅e LVDS SerDes IC nor 실시간 배팅e V-by-One® HS is a technology only for 실시간 배팅e image interface. Bo실시간 배팅 LVDS and 실시간 배팅e 8B10B coding are general data transmission technologies. 실시간 배팅erefore, bo실시간 배팅 can be used for a general high-speed interface 실시간 배팅at connects point A and pint B.
